Marietta's Dustin Baker tries to haul down Logan wide receiver Mason Mays (10) as he crosses the goal line Friday during Southeastern Ohio Athletic League football action at Don Drumm Stadium

Logan is considered as the measuring stick against which all Southeastern Ohio Athletic League teams compare themselves.

Often, the yardstick ends up being an instrument of destruction itself.

Such was the case Friday night at Don Drumm Stadium as the mighty Chieftains, ranked No. 3 in Division II, Region 7 and No. 4 by The Associated Press, erupted for 27 points in the first quarter alone in crushing the Tigers, 49-14, on Senior Night.

The barrage began as Logan scored three touchdowns within a span of one minute and 50 seconds, capitalizing on a blocked punt recovery in the end zone by Jaush Huntsberger. Two short TD runs by senior tailback Clay Morgan sandwiched Huntsberger's hustle play.

"Usually, we get out to a quick start on teams," Logan junior quarterback Patrick Angle said. "We're able to score a lot of points real quick. That's been the case for the most part except last week we kind of struggled a little bit (in a 16-14 win over Zanesville). Today, we came out and played a little bit better.

"We didn't play the way that we wanted to, but we we'll take it." Morgan's versatility was further displayed as the Chieftain co-captain returned an interception 27 yards for another touchdown later in the first quarter and hauled in a 19-TD strike from Logan quarterback Patrick Angle for his third score of the night.

Logan's defense kept close tabs on Marietta's top talents. Junior tailback Perry Wheeler, who came into the game with 733 yards on 123 carries and 13 touchdowns, was effectively contained as he managed only 33 yards on 13 carries.

"It was good to be able to shut down their running game like that because we knew he was a tough runner," Angle said of Wheeler. "We knew we had to stop him and make them pass, and that's what we did."

Marietta's usually reliable passing combo of QB Cody Westbrook and wide out Sean Munfield connected for only two passes for 15 yards. Zane Eschbaugh pulled in one pass for 7 yards.

Coming into Friday's game, Munfield and Eschbaugh each had caught 25 passes for a combined 767 yards.

Westbrook completed 7-of-29 passes in the first half for 59 yards.

"They're good," Marietta first-year coach Andy Schob said of the Chieftains. "I mean, they're as good as we thought they were, but I think we're better than we showed in the first half.

"They have athletes all over the field and they do a great job of covering our guys and getting pressure (on the quarterback). They're linemen are quick and athletic. They just did a great job.

"I think we could have played better, but they're still a little bit better than we us right now so we have to keep working. That's the kind of program we're trying to get our program to be like."

Marietta came off the mat in the fourth quarter with Billy Grizer scoring on an end around from 11 yards out and Conner Hess bulling his way up the middle on a direct snap play for another 11-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers also are struggling with the injury bug. Westbrook continues to be hampered by a torn finger tendon on his passing hand, which will require surgery when the season's over. Senior lineman Stratton Johnson was sidelined with a knee injury in practice Thursday.

Adding insult to injuries, Marietta's preparation time was cut into by the school lockdown Wednesday due to a city-wide manhunt.

"We weren't allowed to practice on Wednesday so we were scrambling," Schob said. "Against a team like Logan you need every minute you can get to prepare. We had to change our offense and our defense to adjust to what they do. Losing that extra day, it wasn't the difference, but definitely doesn't help when you don't have that extra day of practice. You have to prepare every second you can for Logan."

Logan now has won 26 straight SEOAL games.
