Tigers Fall To Quakers

NEW PHILADELPHIA - New Philadelphia got an early "Quaker-up" call when Marietta tailback Perry Wheeler staked the Tigers to a 7-0 advantage with a 9-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

After that MHS TD, the Quakers scored 24 unanswered first-half points en route to a 58-7 triumph in prep football action at Woody Hayes Quaker Field Friday night.

Marietta suffered its second straight setback and dropped to 1-2 on the season, while undefeated New Philly improved to 3-0

On the ensuing Marietta kickoff after scoring in the opening period, New Philadelphia's Will McEwan broke one Tiger tackle and went 82 yards to paydirt to tie the score 8-7.

Early in the second quarter, Quaker kicker Joe Behrendt booted a 38-yard field goal to give the home team its first lead of the contest, 10-7.

Before the second quarter was over, New Philly quarterback Cody Cox hooked up with McEwan for two TD strikes of 51 and 39 yards, respectively.

The Quakers led 24-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, McEwan scored his fourth touchdown of the game, a 62-yard run from scrimmage to make it 30-7.

Playing just three quarters, McEwan finished with 338 all-purpose yards - 83 rushing, 101 receiving, and 154 on returned kicks.

Marietta is scheduled to play at Warren in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
