| Current OU receiver and Ex-Tiger Player Robbie Spencer |
With his team trailing 14-13 and less than a minute left
on the clock in the annual Green vs. White spring
football game at Ohio University former Marietta Tiger
Robbie
Spencer made the big play his team needed.
In a modified hurry-up offense Spencer ran a clear out
route and beat his man down the field.
As his quarterback, redshirt freshman Brian Sweeney,
scrambled away from defenders Spencer broke back and
made a 42-yard touchdown catch that proved to be the
game winner as the White won 20-14.
“I leaped up, made the catch, came down with it and went
on to the end zone,” Spencer said of his TD catch.
On the day Spencer hauled in two passes for 51 yards and
the one touchdown while playing five offensive series.
With the quarters limited to 12 minutes instead of 15
Spencer was pleasantly surprised to see so much playing
time.
“I played a lot more than I thought I was going to,”
Spencer said.
Though he saw substantial playing time and finished with
the second most receiving yards in the game, behind
sophomore LaVon Brazill’s three catches for 58 yards,
Spencer still believes he has room to improve.
Spencer said he feels he can still sharpen up his routes
and learn to read the defenders better as he continues
his walk-on with the Bobcats.
The never quit and work hard attitude is one of the many
things Spencer’s former high school football coach Brian
Spicer praised.
“He’s definitely a driven individual and I could tell
that he had ambitions and goals,” Spicer said.
During his time with the Tigers Spencer proved to be a
very driven individual and Spicer said he could tell the
speedy wide out would be playing collegiate football one
day.
If Spencer can continue his work ethic and learn the
game Spicer believes he’ll see success in a Bobcat
uniform.
“I hope he continues to learn the game and get better at
what he’s doing and I’m sure eventually it’ll work out
for him,” Spicer said.
Running a 4.4 40-yard dash speed has always been
Spencer’s best asset but his time at OU has helped him
gain better technique and more strength as well.
All those attributes should help the Tiger alum as he
continues to work toward moving up the depth chart and
seeing playing time this fall for the Bobcats.
Currently slated as the No. 3 receiver Spencer should
see time on the field this fall, but even if he doesn’t
his time at OU has been a blessing.
“This whole experience has been kind of surreal, but
it’s a great feeling to run out of that tunnel, put on
that Bobcat uniform,” Spencer said.
